FREE PATTERN -Kenai Skyline Shawl - Ravin Sekai Designs 5

Hey Beautiful people! How’s the winter treating you? We’ve been pretty good in our corner of the world. Montreal got quite a dumping of snow this last week, though. 40cm (16in) in total all in one day! And, unfortunately we’re supposed to be getting a bunch more today! I guess I can’t complain too much though since this winter has been pretty mild as opposed to last year! Luckily Montreal has the infrastructure to deal with all the crazy snow.

This weeks pattern is an absolutely lovely (if I do say so myself, and I do! ha!) shawl called the Kenai Skyline Shawl. Kenai is a city, a river, and a region all in Alaska. The river is what gave me my inspiration for this shawl. I recently saw a picture of the river, which is a lovely turquoise color, at sunset. The colors were breathtaking! And so, inspiration having struck hard, I designed this colorful shawl!

Kenai Skyline is created using only 3 different stitch patterns. The garter stitch, the hurdle stitch, and a lace stitch that I designed specifically for this shawl. For the lace stitch, I really wanted something that was representative of the rays of sun streaking across the sky at either dawn or dusk. I hope with this design I captured that feeling. The hurdle stitch of the design is the river winding through the landscape, and the garter is the encroaching (or receding depending on if you see dawn or dusk) darkness of night.

The yarn I used for my sample pattern is one of my favorites, too. Knit Picks Gloss is one of the yarns I enjoy splurging on, because it is so soft! But, it is by no means the only yarn this shawl can be knit in. Bernat Softee Baby is a close match to gauge and drape. Caron Simply Soft is also a good alternative as it has the light shine to it that Gloss does, but the gauge is a bit different. If you decide to use a substitute yarn, make sure you gauge swatch to make sure you’ll get the results you want.

My testers used King Cole Subtle Drifter DK and Simply Soft.

Thank you to my amazing testers!

Kat and Thora. Thank you ladies. You are amazing!
